Life Science
The 7th Grade science curriculum focuses on Life Science. We are afforded the opportunity to study the living world that God created for us. This year’s studies will be broken into four units.
Unit One: Cell Biology and Genetics
This unit will discuss the parts of animal and plant cells. We will also study how cells reproduce through mitosis and meiosis. The students will also learn how DNA and genetics affect heredity including how some disorders are genetically related. Lastly, we will discuss some of the controversial issues regarding genetics, namely cloning, stem cell research and genetic engineering.
Unit Two: Evolution and Earth’s History
This unit covers the beginnings of our world. We will discuss the basics of evolution. Time will be given to studying Darwin, the fossil record, continental drift, carbon dating, and other evolution theory. We will examine other contemporary ideas such as Intelligent Design. While evolution will be introduced and discussed, creation will be presented and taught as the true origin of life. We will study what God says in his holy word, and how God’s Word defends creation.
Unit Three: Structure and Function of Living Things
This unit will provide an overview of simple organisms like bacteria, viruses, protists and fungi. We will be analyzing pond water to see these simple organisms for further investigation. We will also be doing other labs to better understand the world in which we live.
Unit Four: The Human Body
As the crown of God’s creation, we will focus a great deal of time on the human body. We will study the various systems of life in our body. During this unit we will also discuss necessary things to keep our bodies healthy. One of the chapters in this unit will focus on reproduction, and the students will understand and develop sound spiritual attitudes towards God’s purpose for the human body regarding reproduction.
The curriculum meets California state standards. Students will be assessed through written and performance work. The instruction is balanced between lecture, lab and activities.
